How to Do Basic Milkshakes (7 Steps)
Cold, creamy, thick and flavorful, the classic milkshake is worth the occasional indulgence; it's easy to make at home with the right ingredients. The basic milkshake is just milk and ice cream, but the type and quality of ingredients are key. You need whole milk and premium-quality ice cream with a high butterfat content for the creamiest, most flavorful shakes. Flavored syrups and chopped fruit can also be added, to your taste. Keeping all the ingredients as cold as possible is also crucial to creating a shake that will stay thick.
Things You'll Need
- Tall glasses
- Blender
- Whole milk
- Flavored syrups and extracts, optional
- Chopped fruit, optional
- Premium ice cream
- Ice cream scooper
- Straws
Instructions
-
Place tall glasses and the blender jar portion of your blender into the freezer to chill. Take premium-quality ice cream out of the freezer and let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes to soften a bit.
-
Remove the chilled blender container from the freezer, connect it to its base and plug it in.
-
Add whole milk to the blender, adding roughly 1 part for every 2 to 3 parts of ice cream you plan to use, depending on how thick you want the milkshake.
-
Pour in optional flavored syrups and/or chopped fruit, such as chocolate or strawberry syrup, vanilla extract and chopped strawberries. There is no set amount to use, but start small; adding too much flavorings can overpower the ice cream and prevent it from thickening properly.
-
Scoop 2 to 3 parts premium-quality ice cream into the blender for every 1 part of milk. Choose an ice cream brand with a high butterfat content that is the flavor you want prominently in your milkshake.
-
Cover the blender with its lid and blend the ingredients together on the "pulse" setting, which breaks down the ice cream without overblending. Blend just until all the ingredients are well-combined. Taste with a spoon and adjust flavor and texture as you see fit with additional milk, ice cream or flavorings, and re-blend.
-
Remove the chilled glasses from the freezer and pour the milkshakes into the glasses in even amounts. Serve immediately with large straws.
