How do you put out an oven fire?

Never attempt to put out an oven fire yourself if it is a large or uncontrollable fire. Immediately evacuate the premises and call the fire department.

If the fire is small and contained:

1. Turn off the oven and disconnect it from the power source. This will cut off the supply of heat and oxygen to the fire.

2. Close the oven door. This will help to smother the flames and prevent oxygen from entering.

3. Do not open the oven door until the fire is completely out and the oven has cooled down. Opening the door could cause the fire to spread or create a sudden burst of flames.

4. If you have a fire extinguisher, use it to extinguish the fire from a safe distance. Make sure the extinguisher is rated for Class K fires, which are fires involving cooking oils and greases.

If you do not have a fire extinguisher:

* Use baking soda: Baking soda is a non-toxic fire suppressant that can be used to extinguish small grease fires. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda onto the fire.

* Use a thick blanket or towel: Carefully drape a thick blanket or towel over the fire to smother it. Be cautious not to touch the oven door or the blanket while it is still hot.

Important Safety Tips:

* Never use water on a grease fire. Water will cause the grease to splatter and spread the flames.

* Keep a fire extinguisher in your kitchen and know how to use it.

* Be careful when cooking with oil or grease. Do not leave unattended.

* Clean up spills promptly.

* Have a fire escape plan and practice it regularly.

If in doubt, always call the fire department. It is better to be safe than sorry.
