How do you make roti?
Here is a basic recipe for making roti, which is a traditional unleavened flatbread from South Asia:
Ingredients:
* 2 cups of whole wheat flour (atta)
* 1 teaspoon of salt
* 3/4 cup of warm water
* 1 tablespoon of cooking oil or ghee (clarified butter)
Instructions:
1. Combine the flour and salt in a large mixing bowl. Mix well to distribute the salt evenly.
2. Gradually add the warm water to the flour mixture, stirring with a wooden spoon or your hands to form a soft and pliable dough. The dough should not be too sticky or dry.
3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
4. Roll the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and set aside in a warm place for about 30 minutes to let the dough rise.
5. After the dough has risen, divide it into 8-10 equal portions. Roll each portion into a small ball and then flatten it slightly with your hands.
6. Heat a heavy-bottomed skillet or tawa over medium heat. Brush the skillet with a little oil to prevent the roti from sticking.
7. Place one flattened dough ball on the hot skillet. Press it gently with your fingers to flatten it further into a round shape.
8. Cook the roti for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until it puffs up and becomes golden brown. Use a spatula to flip the roti over halfway through cooking.
9. Brush the cooked roti with a little oil or ghee. This helps to keep the roti soft and moist.
10. Remove the roti from the skillet and place it on a plate. Cover the roti with a clean kitchen towel to keep it warm while you cook the remaining rotis.
Repeat steps 6-10 to cook the remaining dough balls.
Serve the rotis hot with your favorite accompaniments like curries, vegetables, or daal. Enjoy!
