How do you make popcorn on the stove?
Here's how to make delicious stovetop popcorn:
What you'll need:
* Popcorn kernels: About 1/4 cup for a small batch.
* Cooking oil: 2-3 tablespoons (use a neutral oil like canola or vegetable oil).
* Salt: To taste (optional).
* Other seasonings: Butter, nutritional yeast, garlic powder, herbs, etc. (optional)
Instructions:
1. Prepare your pot: Use a heavy-bottomed pot with a lid. Make sure it's large enough that the kernels have space to pop without sticking to the sides.
2. Add oil: Pour your oil into the pot and heat it over medium-high heat. You'll know it's ready when you can drop a few kernels in and they pop almost immediately.
3. Add kernels: Carefully pour in your popcorn kernels. Don't overcrowd the pot.
4. Cover and listen: Place the lid on the pot, leaving it slightly ajar to allow steam to escape. Listen carefully for the popping sound to start.
5. Shake and swirl: Once the popping starts, gently shake the pot (or swirl it) every few seconds to ensure even heating.
6. Remove from heat: When the popping slows down to about one pop per second, remove the pot from the heat. Do not overcook or it will burn.
7. Season and serve: Carefully remove the lid (be careful of steam!). Add salt and any other seasonings you like.
Tips:
* Don't open the lid too soon: Resist the urge to peek! Opening the lid too early will let the steam escape and reduce popping.
* Experiment with seasonings: Try different flavors like garlic powder, paprika, nutritional yeast, or even melted butter for a classic taste.
* Use a popcorn pan: If you're making larger batches, consider using a special popcorn pan with a lid that has a hole in the top for steam to escape.
Enjoy your freshly popped popcorn! 🍿
