How to Make a Good-Tasting Fondant (6 Steps)

Although traditional fondant is used to beautify a cake and to create stunning decorations, most people agree that it doesn't taste very good. In fact, it's often stripped from the cake and discarded rather than eaten. This yummy fondant is made with marshmallows and is very easy to make. It's a great alternative and can be used in exactly the same ways that you've used fondant in the past.

Things You'll Need

  • Large glass microwave-safe mixing bowl 16-ounce bag of mini-marshmallows Water 2 pounds of powdered confectioner's sugar ½ cup of shortening

Instructions

  1. Empty the bag of marshmallows into a large glass microwave-safe mixing bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of water and stir well. Microwave the bowl on high for 30 seconds.

  2. Remove the bowl from the microwave and stir. Return the bowl to the microwave and heat on high for 2 minutes. Stir the melting mixture very well. Keep heating the mixture for 30 seconds and then stirring well, until the marshmallows have melted completely.

  3. Use shortening to grease a flat working surface. This will prevent the marshmallow mixture from sticking as you work.

  4. Coat your hands with shortening to prevent sticking. Remove the marshmallow mixture from the bowl and set it on the greased working surface. Pour ¾ cup of the confectioner's sugar on top of the mixture.

  5. Knead the sugar into the mixture for a few minutes. Add the rest of the sugar. Knead the sugar into the dough for about 8 minutes, or until it's no longer sticky. Stop while kneading and reapply shortening to your hands and the working surface if necessary.

  6. Pick the entire batch up and stretch it using both hands. Add a little water and knead it for a few minutes if it tears easily. You're done when you can stretch the mixture without tearing it.
