How to Use Fondant to Make Stars to Use on Wires on a Cake
Fondant's popularity in cake decorating isn't just because of the finished, professional look it gives. The cut-out shapes it can make are almost limitless, and they're also simple, eye-catching and easy enough for beginners to handle. It's even time-saving, since you'll need to make the shapes at least two days before you decorate the cake to allow them time to dry. You can use either ready-made or homemade fondant, and you can even mount them on wires or lollipop sticks.
Things You'll Need
- Fondant
- Cornstarch
- Rolling pin
- Star-shaped cookie cutters
- Small spatula
- Waxed paper
- 18 gauge florists' wire
- Wire cutters
- 1 oz. (28.3 g) fondant
- 1/4 tsp. (1.2 ml) water
Instructions
-
Dust a clean, dry work surface with cornstarch to prevent the fondant from sticking. Dust the rolling pin with cornstarch as well, then roll out the fondant to 1/8 inch (3 mm) thick.
-
Dip the cookie cutter in cornstarch, then cut out star shapes from the fondant, re-dusting the cutter in cornstarch as needed to prevent sticking. Leave the stars in place until you've cut all of them out. Remove the excess fondant from around the stars, making sure all the stars still stay in place (this prevents them from being accidentally misshapen).
-
Move the stars with the small spatula to a cornstarch-dusted piece of waxed paper and let dry for at least 48 hours.
-
When the stars are dry, cut the wire into desired-length pieces with the wire cutters. Combine the 1 oz. (28.3 g) of fondant with the water to make fondant adhesive, then attach one wire to the back of each star with fondant adhesive. Let dry for at least 15 minutes.
