How to Bake in a Steamer
You can bake cakes or buns in an electric steamer or a simple metal steamer placed over a pot of boiling water. These baked goods are usually lighter and have a spongier texture than those baked in an oven. Steamed cakes and buns will also be much paler in color as they will not brown or form a crust during the steaming process. Try experimenting with your favorite recipes and see how they turn out when baked in a steamer.
Things You'll Need
- Baking pan
- Nonstick cooking spray
- Cake batter or dough
- Water
- Kitchen towel
- Pot holders
- Plate
Instructions
-
Choose a baking pan that is small enough to be placed inside the basket of your steamer. Most steamer baskets have holes in the bottom so you cannot pour batter directly into the basket or the batter will drain through the holes in the bottom.
-
Spray the inside of the baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. This will prevent the baked goods from sticking to the pan.
-
Mix the batter following the directions of the recipe you would like to bake in your steamer. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. If you are making rolls or buns, shape them into individual buns and then place them in the pan leaving a little room between each bun as they will increase in size during steaming.
-
Fill an electric steamer with water according to the manufacturer's directions for your particular appliance and turn it on. If you are using a simple metal vegetable steamer with a large pot, fill the pot approximately halfway full of water and bring it to a boil. Make sure the water does not touch the bottom of the steamer when it is placed on the pot.
-
Place the pan into the steamer above the boiling water. Place a kitchen towel over the top of the steamer and then place the lid on top. The towel will protect the baked goods from condensation dripping off of the lid.
-
Steam the recipe until it has reached your desired degree of doneness. Most steamed items prepared in a 9-inch baking pan take approximately 15 to 20 minutes to cook through.
-
Remove the lid and the kitchen towel, being careful to avoid the hot steam. Use potholders to remove the pan from the steamer and turn the cake out onto a plate.
