How to Make Ziploc Icing Bags (6 Steps)
Professional bakers use icing bags with metal tips to create detailed designs on cakes and other baked goods. An easy way to create an icing bag at home is through the use of a common household item, the Ziploc sandwich bag. Although the results may not be as professional looking as the icing bags used by the pros, it can be perfectly suited to everyday baking projects and teaching kids how to add flair to simple recipes.
Things You'll Need
- Scissors
Instructions
-
Open a large Ziploc bag by pulling apart its seal or unzipping its zipper.
-
Scoop icing into the bag, focusing on one corner. To prevent a mess your first time using this technique, place only about a softball sized amount of icing into the bag. As you become more accustomed to using the Ziploc bag you may wish to increase the amount of icing you work with.
-
Grasp the top of the Ziploc bag where there is no icing with your hand to lightly close it, and to force the icing towards the point of the corner.
-
Cut open the point of the bag where the icing is. Depending on the amount of icing you would like released from the bag, you can choose to cut a large or small hole. To start, you may want to cut the point off 1/4 of an inch from the edge of the bag.
-
Aim the hole towards the cupcake, cookie, or cake you would like to ice.
-
Grasp the top of the bag more firmly with your hand and push down on the icing from the outside of the Ziploc, so a stream of icing comes out of the hole.
