How to Decorate a Ninja Cake (8 Steps)
A ninja cake can be a fun addition to a birthday or costume party. This project is suitable for beginning and intermediate cake decorators, as the carving and molding processes required are relatively simple. Only two colors of fondant are required for the project in order to emulate the veiled face of a ninja. The cake and buttercream frosting can be colored and flavored to preference, as they will be completely covered with black and white fondant.
Things You'll Need
- 2 10-inch cake rounds
- Flat cake plate
- Knife
- Buttercream icing
- Wax paper
- 2 cups black fondant
- 1 cup white fondant
- Rolling pin
Instructions
-
Spread a small amount of buttercream frosting in the middle of the cake platter to aid in holding the cake still during the decorating process. Place one of the cake rounds in the center of the platter. Cover completely with buttercream frosting.
-
Center the second cake round over the first cake round. With the knife, carve about 1 1/2 inches of the sides off of the layered cake. The resulting shape should be an oval, which will serve as the base for the ninja's face. Discard the cake scraps or save for other projects.
-
Cover the entire outside of the oval cake with a thick layer of buttercream frosting. Any irregularities which occurred during the carving process can be smoothed over with additional frosting at this time.
-
Place approximately 1 1/2 cups of black fondant in the center of a large square of wax paper. Roll the black fondant into a large oval measuring approximately 14 inches by 12 inches. The final thickness of the fondant should be approximately 1/4 inch.
-
Invert the wax paper carefully over the cake layers and gently mold the black fondant to cover the outside of the cake. It is important to press gently during this process to avoid imprinting the fondant or damaging the underlying cake. Trim away any excess black fondant and reserve for later decorating needs.
-
Place 1/3 cup of white fondant in the center of a square of wax paper. Roll the fondant to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into an even oval, measuring approximately 2 inches by 6 inches.
-
Put the white oval of fondant on the cake to form the section of the ninja's face not obscured by black veiling.
-
Using the leftover black fondant, mold a pair of eyes and eyebrows and place on top of the white fondant. Advanced cake decorators may choose to mold the shape of a nose and mouth to add additional texture to the ninja's face.
