Preheat your oven to 350-degrees Fahrenheit. Grease and flour the cake pans necessary, according to the cake mix box instructions.

Make the cake mix according to directions by adding water, egg and oil. Stir until the cake mix is combined.

Decide how much coconut flavor and texture you want your cake to have. Measure out anywhere from 1/4 cup to 3/4 cup of sweetened or unsweetened, shredded coconut.

Transfer the coconut into the cake mix batter and stir just until all of it is incorporated.
