How to Melt Chocolate Chips By Adding Oil
Melted chocolate can turn average snacks into sinful treats. Everything from pretzels to strawberries can be made decadent with a bit of chocolate. While you can melt chocolate by itself, adding a bit a fat can help ensure the chocolate melts more smoothly. Also, the fat allows the chocolate to have a softer consistency once it sets. It's important to choose a neutral flavored fat though or it could alter the taste of the chocolate. One of the best choices is vegetable oil.
Things You'll Need
- 12 ounces of chocolate chips
- Microwave safe bowl
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Instructions
-
Place the chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl. Since plastic can hold onto funky flavors, it's best to use a glass bowl for this technique. Just make sure it's microwave safe and large enough to stir the chips in.
-
Add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. One tablespoon of oil is all that's needed for a 12 ounce bag of chocolate chips. Adding too much oil could affect the structure of the chocolate and make it impossible for it to setup later.
-
Mix the oil into the chips. You need to make sure the oil is thoroughly mixed into the chocolate chips. Once it's thoroughly mixed, the chocolate chips will have a sheen to them and the oil will no longer be visible.
-
Microwave the chips on high for 10 seconds at a time. The power of the microwave will determine how long it takes to melt the chocolate chips. If you have a low wattage microwave, you may want to start out with 30 seconds and then decrease to 10 or 15 second intervals.
-
Stir the chocolate after each heating until fully melted. It's important to stir the chocolate after each heating or some of the chocolate will scorch while the rest remains solid. This also ensures that the chocolate melts faster.
