How to Soften Brown Sugar Immediately (3 Steps)
Brown sugar is used in a variety of baking recipes. It often hardens and becomes difficult to manage, leaving you with clumps or even blocks of brown sugar. Hardening occurs when the sugar's moisture evaporates, often as a result of leaving the package open. To soften brown sugar, you must restore the lost moisture. Though many methods call for the sugar to sit overnight, you can use heat to soften the sugar immediately.
Things You'll Need
- Brown sugar
- Microwave
- Water
- Microwave-safe container
- Paper towel
- Plastic wrap
- Metal fork or spoon
Instructions
-
Place the desired amount of brown sugar to be softened in a microwave-safe bowl.
-
Wet a paper towel and wring out the excess water so that the paper towel is damp, rather than soaking wet. Place the damp paper towel on top of the brown sugar and cover the container with plastic wrap.
-
Microwave on high at for about one minute. Poke the sugar with a utensil. If it is still hard, continue microwaving at 30-second intervals until the sugar is soft enough.
