How to Caramelize Pecans for Yams (5 Steps)
Skip the marshmallows on top of a sweet potato casserole. Scatter caramelized pecans over yams instead. The pecans add a crunchy, savory flavor to contrast with the soft sweetness of the yams. Though they require more preparation time than throwing marshmallows on top does, once you try caramelized pecans with either yams or sweet potatoes, you may discover a new favorite.
Things You'll Need
- Saucepan
- 1/2 cup sugar
- Wooden spoon
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 cup pecans
- Parchment paper
- Baking sheet
Instructions
-
Heat the sugar in the saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar melts and darkens. Use a wooden spoon to avoid burning your hand from heat traveling up the handle of a metal spoon.
-
Remove the sugar from the heat. Add the salt and the pecans. Stir until the pecans are evenly coated with caramelized sugar.
-
Pour the caramelized pecans out onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Separate the pecans into a thin layer so they aren't clumped together. Cool to room temperature.
-
Tap the pecan mixture with the back of the wooden spoon to break it up.
-
Scatter the caramelized pecans over cooked yams just before serving.
