How to Do Hair in Fondant (7 Steps)

Using fondant is one sure way of impressing your party guests, friends and family. Mostly used for decorative and wedding cakes, fondant -- a super sugary and thick frosting that covers cakes -- can be molded into just about anything. If your cake has fondant people on it, they will certainly need some hair. With just a few steps, you can create hair for your fondant boys and girls with short, long, straight or curly hair.

Things You'll Need

  • Cornstarch
  • Fondant roller
  • Knife
  • Cup
  • Dowels
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Sprinkle your counter top with cornstarch.

  2. Roll out your fondant with a fondant roller until it is only 1/16-inch thick.

  3. Cut the fondant into 1/8-inch strips. For straight hair, continue to Step 4. For curly hair, skip to Step 5.

  4. Lay the pieces of fondant hair over a cup -- select the size of the cup based on how big or little your fondant people will be. Let the fondant strips set for 5 to 10 minutes. To continue, skip to Step 6.

  5. Wrap the fondant hair strips around a dowel to make curly hair. Select the thickness of the dowel based on how big or little your fondant people will be. Let the fondant strips set for 5 to 10 minutes.

  6. Apply a tiny piece of fondant to the head of your fondant people. "Glue" the straight or curly hair to the heads of your fondant people. Snip of the ends of the hair with a pair of scissors so the hair is the length you'd like.

  7. Allow the hair and fondant "glue" to dry for 10 minutes.
