How to Dye Cake Batter in a Rainbow
Rainbow cakes are impressive and look complicated, but they are actually easy to make, provided you have food coloring. Use gel paste food coloring, if possible, rather than the liquid variety. Gel paste is more concentrated and gives the batter more vivid color without having to use a lot, so your rainbow cake will be bright and pretty.
Things You'll Need
- Cake batter
- Bowls
- Food coloring dye
- Cake pans
Instructions
-
Divide prepared cake batter evenly among six bowls. Use any type of light colored cake batter, such as vanilla, which can be homemade or prepared from a store-bought box.
-
Stir food coloring into each bowl of cake batter. Choose a different rainbow color -- red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple-- for each. Add a tiny amount at a time until you reach your desired shade.
-
Pour the colored batters, one at a time into a cake pan, pouring each color on top of another without mixing the colors. You can divide the batters among two cake pans if you want a traditional two-layer cake. Alternatively, for a six-layer rainbow cake with a different color for each layer, pour the colored batters into separate cake pans and bake according to the recipe.
