Instructions for a Pizza Stone (6 Steps)
Make pizzeria-quality pizza at home by using a pizza stone. Unlike a metal baking pan, a pizza stone releases heat from the oven slowly to the pizza crust, giving you a crisp exterior and a chewy interior. Pizza stones create an environment in your home oven similar to the large wood-burning pizza ovens used in restaurants. But pizza stones not only cook pizza. The next time you make bread, rolls, cookies or biscuits, you can bake them on the pizza stone for a crisper crust and more tender texture inside.
Things You'll Need
- Pizza stone
- Cornmeal
- Unbaked pizza
- Pizza peel or rimless cookie sheet
Instructions
-
Set the pizza stone in a cold oven and heat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 to 60 minutes to preheat both the stone and the oven.
-
Prepare the pizza until it needs baking.
-
Scatter cornmeal in a thin layer over the surface of both the pizza peel and the pizza stone inside the oven to prevent the crust from sticking.
-
Transfer the unbaked pizza crust to the pizza peel and use the peel to slide the pizza onto the stone in the oven.
-
Bake the pizza at 450 degrees Fahrenheit until the crust cooks through, 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the thickness of your crust.
-
Lift the baked pizza from the stone with the pizza peel and leave the stone in the oven after you turn off the heat to cool completely.
