How to Bake in Terra Cotta

Not all terra cotta is created equally, especially when it comes to baking foods in terra cotta pots. Flowerpots or other clay pots may contain heavy metals and are not considered safe for food preparation unless they are lined with food-grade safe material. Terra cotta baking pots are safe to use for everything from roasted garlic to full meals, they come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and can be found at kitchen specialty stores and online.

Things You'll Need

  • Food grade terra cotta baking pot
  • Oven mitts or hot pads
  • Trivet

Instructions

  1. Soak the terra cotta pot in cold water for 10 to 30 minutes.

  2. Fill the pot with the ingredients of your favorite recipe.

  3. Place the pot in a cold oven. Preheating the oven may cause the pot to crack.

  4. Turn the temperature of the oven to 400 to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Cook the food for 1/3 less time called for in the recipe. The higher temperature and the clay pot will cook the food faster than normal. So if the recipe calls for one hour, check for doneness after 40 minutes.

  5. Remove the pot from the oven when the food is done using hot pads or oven mitts and set the pot on a trivet or stove burner to cool.
