What is shake and bake?
"Shake and bake" refers to a method of cooking methamphetamine using simple materials and ingredients, often without the need for elaborate laboratory equipment. It involves combining specific chemicals, including pseudoephedrine (extracted from over-the-counter medications), lithium strips (from batteries), and other solvents and additives, in a sealed container. The container is then shaken vigorously to mix the chemicals and initiate a reaction that produces methamphetamine.
The term "shake and bake" is used because of the simplicity and relatively low-tech nature of this method compared to traditional methamphetamine synthesis. It gained notoriety due to the ease with which it could be carried out in small, clandestine operations, often in residential areas or even vehicles, leading to concerns about public safety.
However, "shake and bake" methamphetamine production is extremely dangerous due to the highly flammable and volatile nature of the chemicals involved. The process can result in fires, explosions, and the release of toxic fumes, posing significant risks to those involved and the surrounding community.
Law enforcement agencies have actively targeted "shake and bake" operations due to their potential hazards and links to criminal activity. Various measures are taken to control the availability of precursor chemicals and monitor suspicious purchases of materials used in this method.
