What type of germination eggplant?
Eggplant seeds germinate epigeally. This means that the cotyledons (seed leaves) emerge above the soil surface during germination.
Here's what happens during epigeal germination of eggplant:
1. Seed imbibes water: The seed absorbs water, causing it to swell.
2. Radicle emerges: The radicle (embryonic root) emerges from the seed and grows downward.
3. Hypocotyl elongates: The hypocotyl (stem below the cotyledons) elongates, lifting the cotyledons above the soil surface.
4. Cotyledons unfold: The cotyledons unfold and begin to photosynthesize, providing energy for the seedling.
5. True leaves emerge: The true leaves emerge from the shoot apex, and the seedling continues to grow.
Important Note: Eggplant seeds are quite small and delicate. They require warm soil temperatures (around 70-80°F or 21-27°C) and adequate moisture to germinate successfully.
