How long boil ham?

How To Boil Ham

- Remove the ham from its packaging and place ham fat-side up in a large stock pot.

- Fill the liquid measuring cup with water to the level indicated in the table.

- Add water and 2 cups Coca Cola to the pot. Cover the pot and place it over high heat.

- Allow the liquid to come to a boil, then reduce the heat to maintain the gentlest simmer.

- Cook the ham until a thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the ham reads 140 degrees Fahrenheit. (The time to cook the ham will vary depending on its size.)

- Remove the pot from the burner, turn off the stovetop, and allow the ham to rest in the cooking water, covered, for 15 minutes.

- Remove the ham from the pot, place on cutting board and cover loosely with foil. Let the ham rest for at least 15 minutes before slicing and serving.

Tips

- Choose a ham that is fully cooked and ready to eat. Ham is precooked and safe to eat as long as you reach 140°F, but I recommend cooking a little more to 145°F.

- Don’t overcook ham, or it will become dry or stringy.

- For best flavor, cook ham using a flavoring liquid. Popular options include water, pineapple juice, ginger ale, and apple juice.

- Add whole spices to the cooking water for extra flavor. I like to use cloves, cardamom, cinnamon sticks, star anise, and bay leaf.

- Add a little brown sugar to the cooking water for a glaze.

- Cover the ham with foil during the last 30 minutes of cooking to prevent the outside of the ham from drying out.

- Let the ham rest for 15-30 minutes before slicing and serving. This allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in a more flavorful and moist ham.

- Serve the ham with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and sweet potato casserole.

- Leftover ham can be used in a variety of dishes, such as sandwiches, casseroles, and salads.
