How to Cook Grits Southern Style (5 Steps)
Cooking creamy grits has almost become an art form. Many cooks spice up their grits with cheddar cheese or shrimp. You need just a few ingredients to make a basic Southern style grits dish.
Things You'll Need
- 1 cup grits (not instant)
- 4 cups water
- 1 cup milk
- salt to taste
- pepper to taste
- 1 tsp. butter
- 2 qt. sauce pan with lid
Instructions
-
Pour the 4 cups of water and 1 cup of milk into a 4-quart sauce pan. Add salt to taste. About 1/4 teaspoon of salt should do it. Place the pan on the stove and heat on high until the mixture begins to boil.
-
Add 1 tsp. butter and return to boiling.
-
Add the grits when the water begins to boil again. Stir the grits into the mixture while pouring.
-
Place the lid on the sauce pan and reduce the burner to medium low. Allow the grits to cook for about 30 minutes. Stir the grits, mashing any lumps you find with a fork.
-
Remove the grits from the burner. Allow the grits to sit in sauce pan for 10 minutes to cool before serving with additional butter.
