Homemade Cereal Flakes
Boxes of pricey cereal can make the "breakfast of champions" feel like a major investment. Homemade alternatives to flake-type cereals are not complicated or time-consuming to create, however. To keep the cereal as healthy as possible, look for whole-grain flour to make up the bulk of the recipe. Making your own cereal flakes also allows you to control the amount of sweetener you use, as well as eliminate artificial preservatives.
Things You'll Need
- Cooking spray
- Cookie sheets
- Flour
- Water
- Optional ingredients (chopped nuts, for instance)
- Dry and liquid measuring cups
- Mixing bowl
- Wooden spoon
- Small spatula
- Wire racks
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and grease 1 or 2 cookie sheets.
-
Measure roughly equal parts flour and water. The flour can be a mixture of grains, such as bran, corn and oat flour, or all one kind.
-
Add optional ingredients to the bowl with the dry mix. Options include a handful of ground nuts. You might also want to add a dash of salt; or to sweeten the cereal by adding a few spoonfuls of sugar, or a drizzle of honey or molasses.
-
Pour the water into the dry mixture, a small amount at a time. Blend the ingredients after each addition of water, until it reaches a pastelike consistency.
-
Spread the mixture over 1 or 2 of the greased cookie sheets, depending on how big a batch you're making. Spread the layer as thinly as possible without actually tearing through the pastelike batter.
-
Set the cookie sheets in the oven and bake the cereal mixture until it becomes golden brown and crispy -- about 15 minutes.
-
Remove the cookie sheets form the oven. Pry the cereal layers from the sheets and cool them on wire racks. Once they cool, break them into flakes.
