How to Make Granola With Puffed Rice Cereal (6 Steps)
When you want to take your granola from "twigs and berries" health food to a nutritious cereal brimming with interesting flavors and textures, start by adding grains other than rolled oats to your personal blend. Flat, crispy puffed rice cereal is a perfect foil to the rounded, denser crunch of rolled oats. Round out the grains with a cornucopia of nuts, seeds and dried fruit, as well as honey, cinnamon and other flavors.
Things You'll Need
- Rolled oats
- Wooden spoon
- Large mixing bowl
- Puffed rice cereal
- Seeds, such as pumpkin or sunflower
- Chopped nuts, such as pistachios, almonds or pecans
- Honey
- Olive or vegetable oil
- Cinnamon
- Salt
- Rimmed baking sheets
- Wire rack
- Airtight containers
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
-
Mix together 8 parts rolled oats, 4 parts puffed rice cereal, 4 parts combined seeds and nuts, 1 part honey and 1 part oil.
-
Blend in cinnamon and salt to taste.
-
Spread the oat and puffed rice cereal blend on baking sheets and put them into the oven for 30 minutes. Stir the blend occasionally as it toasts in the oven.
-
Remove the granola when it is evenly browned. Set the baking sheet on a wire rack to cool.
-
Stir in optional dried fruit -- about the same amount of fruit as nuts and seeds, or somewhat less -- after the granola has cooled. Store in airtight containers.
