How to Make Wheat Flour in a Vita-Mix Blender
Vita-Mix blenders are known for their powerful action and ability to grind, juice and puree foods while retaining the foods' nutrients. If you are lucky enough to own one or can borrow one, you can make your own wheat flour for homemade breads in seconds.
Things You'll Need
- A Vita-Mix Super blender model with dry blade container
- 1 3/4 cups (400g) whole kernel wheat berries
- 1 tsp. (6g) salt (optional)
Proper Equipment
-
There are many different models of Vita-Mix machines. To grind flour, you must use a model with the prefix "Super" (as in Vita-Mix Super 5200). The Super models come with an extra container containing a dry blade. A dry blade is thicker and less sharp. If you try this method with a normal wet blade, your flour will be damp and clump together in a paste, according to Vita-Mix manufacturer's guidelines (see link in References).
-
Once you have identified that you have the right machine, you can get started. Measure 1 3/4 cups whole wheat berries and salt into the container. Secure the lid and turn the machine on "High." Grind for 1 minute. If you need more flour for your recipe, repeat the process with more wheat berries. Grinding more than 2 cups at a time will prevent you from achieving the right texture, so do it in batches.
-
Now that you have your basic ingredient: homemade wheat flour, you'll need a good recipe. Vita.mix.com has recipes adapted specifically to their machines or you can check out kneadtoknow.com, reciperascal.com or cooksrecipes.com for a huge variety of homemade wheat bread, roll and cake recipes (see links in References).
-
Store your flour properly. Storing your homemade flour in an airtight container in the freezer will keep the oils found naturally in the flour from turning rancid. This method will also preserve your flour's phyto-nutrients.
