How to Cook Cornbread in a Cast Iron Dutch Oven
What's a better quick-and-hearty meal than a pot of beans with homemade cornbread? Many versions of cornbread exist, but this one is baked inside a cast iron Dutch oven, which can be done in a traditional indoor oven or on a bed of coals while camping outside.
Things You'll Need
- 12-inch cast iron Dutch oven
- 1 1/2 tsp. of shortening such as Crisco
- 1 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1 cup white cornmeal
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2 tbsp. flour
Instructions
-
Grease the cast iron Dutch oven with shortening and place it inside a 450-degree oven with the lid on to heat while you prepare the batter.
-
Mix the milk and egg well.
-
In a separate bowl, mix the dry ingredients together, and then add this dry mixture to the milk and egg mixture. Stir until there are no more lumps.
-
Pour the mixture into the Dutch oven, cover again with the lid, and bake for 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
