Everyone loves banana applesauce bread. This recipe is a variation on a recipe that has been handed down through the generations, but don't be afraid to innovate. Things You'll Need

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 cups white flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 medium smushed banana
  • 1 cup apple sauce
  • 1/2 to 1 cup walnuts
  • 1/2 to 1 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 2 large bowls
  • 1 spatula or wooden spoon
  • Bread crocks or glass baking dishes

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.

  2. Combine the first ingredients for the banana applesauce bread as follows: Place flours, sugars, baking powder and allspice in a large mixing bowl.

  3. Place one smushed banana in a large bowl. Add the dry mixture from the other bowl a little at a time. Begin adding applesauce as needed to work and fold the dry ingredients.

  4. Add 1/2 cup orange juice to the banana applesauce bread mixture a little at a time as needed. The mixture will be thick.

  5. Now add 1/2 of the walnuts and mix the banana applesauce bread ingredients by hand. If you like a thick bread, use the remaining 1/2 cup of walnuts to the mixture.

  6. Next, add raisins, 1/2 of the measure at a time. Remember that you have the option of using 1/2 to 1 full cup.

  7. For best results, bake you banana applesauce bread in glass baking dishes or bread crocks. These can be oiled to make it easier to remove the bread when it is done.

  8. After the banana applesauce bread has baked at 350 degrees for about 25 minutes, check the center with a toothpick. If the center is wet, allow it to bake for a few more minutes.
