What are the 5 vegetable subgroups?

There are not 5 subgroups in the USDA's Food Patterns.

The USDA MyPlate guidelines recommend eating from five vegetable subgroups, but they are NOT technically called "subgroups". Here are those five groups:

1. Dark Green Vegetables: Examples include spinach, kale, collard greens, broccoli, and asparagus.

2. Red and Orange Vegetables: Examples include carrots, sweet potatoes, red bell peppers, tomatoes, and beets.

3. Legumes: Examples include beans, peas, lentils, and soybeans.

4. Starchy Vegetables: Examples include corn, peas, potatoes, and winter squash.

5. Other Vegetables: Examples include mushrooms, onions, cucumbers, and green beans.

It's important to consume a variety of vegetables from all of these groups to ensure you're getting a wide range of nutrients.
