Can a yellow leaf produce food?

A yellow leaf cannot produce food through photosynthesis.

Leaves contain chlorophyll, a green pigment that absorbs light energy from the sun and uses it to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose (food) and oxygen. When leaves turn yellow, it means that they are losing their chlorophyll and are no longer able to photosynthesize efficiently. The yellow color is due to the presence of other pigments like carotenoids and anthocyanins, which become more visible as chlorophyll breaks down.

However, it's important to note that yellow leaves may still contain some chlorophyll and can still carry out photosynthesis to some extent. The rate of photosynthesis in yellow leaves is reduced compared to green leaves, but they can still contribute to the plant's overall food production.
