How to Prepare Dehydrated Hash Browns

Drying hash browns reduces their weight and increases their storage life. Many campers prize dried hash browns for lasting months without spoiling and not taking up much backpack space. The secret to preparing dehydrated hash browns is to use the correct amount of liquid to reconstitute them. Too much liquid makes them soggy; not enough leaves them tough.

Things You'll Need

  • 3 cups water
  • 2 tsp. salt (optional)
  • 1 cup dehydrated hash browns
  • 1 tbsp. butter or cooking spray
  • Skillet
  • Spatula

Reconstituting

  1. Bring the water and salt to a boil over medium heat.

  2. Add the hash browns to the water.

  3. Remove the pan from the heat. Cover the pan for 10 minutes or until the hash browns absorb all the liquid.

Cooking

  1. Coat a skillet with cooking spray, or melt the butter over medium-high heat.

  2. Add the reconstituted hash browns. Cook them on one side for five to seven minutes or until browned.

  3. Divide the hash browns in the skillet into four parts.

  4. Flip each part with a spatula to cook the opposite side for one to two additional minutes or until browned.
