When was jello made?

Jello's story goes back further than you might think!

* 1845: Peter Cooper is credited with creating a gelatin dessert that he called "American Co-operative Gelatin." He was a prominent industrialist and inventor who later founded the Cooper Union in New York City.

* 1897: Pearl Wait, a pharmacist, was the first to make and sell gelatin desserts as we know them today. He used his knowledge of chemistry to create a powder form of gelatin that could easily be dissolved and flavored. He called it "Jell-O" and sold it in six flavors: Strawberry, Raspberry, Lemon, Orange, Cherry, and Peach.

* 1902: The Jell-O Company was established and began mass-producing the product, making it a household staple.

So, while the concept of gelatin desserts dates back to the 1840s, Jello as we know it was created in 1897.
