To find the density of a potato, you will need the following materials:
- A potato
- A kitchen scale
- A graduated cylinder
- Water
Steps:
1. Weigh the potato on the kitchen scale. Record the mass of the potato in grams.
2. Fill the graduated cylinder with water to the 100 mL mark.
3. Gently place the potato in the graduated cylinder. The water level will rise. Record the new water level in milliliters.
4. Subtract the initial water level from the final water level to find the volume of water displaced by the potato. This is the volume of the potato in milliliters.
5. Calculate the density of the potato by dividing the mass of the potato by its volume. The density will be expressed in grams per milliliter (g/mL).
Example:
If the potato weighs 150 grams and displaces 80 milliliters of water, then its density is 150 grams / 80 milliliters = 1.875 grams per milliliter.
