What is condein?

Condeine is an organic compound in the alkaloid family. Chemically, it is an alkaloid found in the opium poppy. It is primarily used for its opiate-like medicinal properties, which can provide pain relief, cough suppression, and a mild sedative effect. In high doses, it can cause sedation, relaxation, and drowsiness, though in larger amounts, it can become addictive and habit-forming. Condeine has the formula C18H21NO3 and was first isolated in 1832 by the French pharmacist Pierre-Jean Robiquet. Besides its medical use, it has been used as an additive in illicit drug production, such as the making of heroin.
