What are the two broad categories of food web?

Detritus-based food webs

These food webs are based on dead organic matter, or detritus. Detritus can come from plants, animals, or other organisms. Bacteria and fungi break down detritus into smaller pieces that can be eaten by other organisms. Detritus-based food webs are typically found in aquatic ecosystems, such as marshes, swamps, and oceans.

Grazing-based food webs

These food webs are based on living plants. Plants are eaten by herbivores, which are then eaten by carnivores. Grazing-based food webs are typically found in terrestrial ecosystems, such as grasslands, forests, and deserts.

Detritus-based and grazing-based food webs are not mutually exclusive. Some ecosystems may have both types of food webs.
