How to Slice a Coconut (3 Steps)
People use everything from a machete to a hacksaw to a power drill to slice open a coconut, although the process doesn’t need to be that dramatic. A coconut’s hard, smooth shell is usually already removed before it arrives in stores. What is most commonly seen and available for sale is the brown, hairy, inner nut, which can be broken open with a few items from a toolbox. All you need to know is the location of the coconut’s Achilles’ heel.

How to Slice Open a Coconut

Locate the coconut’s “eyes,” which are three dark indentations clustered at one end. Pierce an eye with the screwdriver by tapping the butt end of the screwdriver with the hammer. Repeat with a second eye. Turn the coconut upside-down and drain the water into a bowl.

Wrap the drained coconut in a towel and set it on a hard surface. Hit the coconut with the hammer, rotating it as needed, until it cracks open.

Use a regular table knife to pry the white flesh out of the shell. A thin, brown tissue may be attached to the flesh. While it is edible and nutritious, it can be removed with a vegetable peeler if preferred.
