How to Make Torta Sandwiches (6 Steps)

Tortas are Mexican sandwiches that are just as flexible in their fillings as their Northern counterparts. Many tortas include refried beans and guacamole instead of mayonnaise and mustard. Some tortas are served ahogada, which means drowned. These tortas are covered in an optional chili sauce reminiscent of a French dip sandwich and au jus sauce. The sauce adds moisture and flavor to the sandwich, but it can also be served on the side for dipping. The bolillo roll used to make the sandwich is similar to a small hoagie roll with the texture of French bread.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 bolillo roll
  • Bread knife
  • 1/4 cup refried beans
  • 1/4 cup guacamole
  • Spreader
  • 1/4 lb. meat for filling
  • 1 cup chili sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice the roll in half horizontally.

  2. Spread the refried beans on the cut portion of the bottom half of the roll.

  3. Top the refried beans with half of the guacamole. Spread the remaining half on the cut surface of the top of the roll.

  4. Pile the meat on top of the bottom half of the roll.

  5. Place the top half of the bolillo roll on the sandwich and slice in half across the width of the torta.

  6. Serve the sandwich covered with the optional chili sauce, or serve the sauce on the side for dipping, if desired.
