What is kwarshioka?

Kwashiorkor is a severe form of malnutrition that results from a deficiency of protein but enough calories. It is most commonly seen in children in developing countries, but it can also occur in adults.

Kwashiorkor is caused by a lack of essential amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. These amino acids are found in animal products, such as meat, fish, and eggs, as well as in some plant foods, such as legumes, nuts, and seeds.

When the body does not get enough essential amino acids, it cannot produce the proteins that it needs to function properly. This can lead to a number of health problems, including:

* Edema (swelling) of the face, legs, and abdomen

* Growth retardation

* Skin lesions

* Diarrhea

* Anemia

* Weakness

* Fatigue

* irritability

Kwashiorkor can be treated with a diet that is high in protein and calories. In some cases, hospitalization may be necessary.

To prevent kwashiorkor, it is important to eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of protein-rich foods. Children should also be given breast milk or formula until they are at least 1 year old.
