Is food coloring toxic to dogs?

While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration considers most food coloring to be safe for human consumption, the safety of food coloring in dogs has not been extensively studied. Therefore, it is difficult to say definitively whether or not food coloring is toxic to dogs. However, there is some evidence to suggest that they can be harmful when consumed in large amounts.

Symptoms of food coloring poisoning in dogs may include:

Vomiting

Diarrhea

Nausea

Itchy skin

Excessive scratching

Hives

Difficulty breathing

Seizures

In severe cases, food coloring poisoning can lead to death.

If you think your dog may have consumed a toxic amount of food coloring, contact your veterinarian immediately.

As a general rule, it is best to avoid giving your dog any food that contains artificial colors. If you are concerned about your dog's health, talk to your veterinarian about safe and healthy alternatives.
