Cleopatra did not die by drinking poisoned wine. According to some accounts, she likely killed herself by the venomous bite of an asp (type a snake), to avoid being displayed after defeat in Rome after having lost the Battle of Actium to the forces of Augustus and his ally Herod the Great.
