How to Store Wine in Mason Jars (7 Steps)

Whether you are looking for a way to store homemade wine or the remaining contents of a bottle, Mason jars are an easy and versatile option. Some people would discourage this practice, insisting that the lids will let air in or compromise the taste of the wine. While this may be true, there are a few steps to take to make storing wine in Mason jars a viable option.

Things You'll Need

  • Mason jar with lid
  • Scissors
  • Waxed paper
  • Rubber band
  • Label
  • Marker

Instructions

  1. Fill a clean Mason jar with wine.

  2. Cut a square piece of waxed paper, large enough to cover the opening of the jar with some excess.

  3. Place the square piece of waxed paper over the opening of the jar.

  4. Place a rubber band over the waxed paper, slightly beneath the opening of the jar.

  5. Place the lid of the Mason jar over the waxed paper and close it as tightly as you can.

  6. Write the name of the wine on an adhesive label and attach it to the outside of the Mason jar.

  7. Store the Mason jar at a temperature of 55 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit --- preferably somewhere in the middle. Also, make sure your storage space is away from sunlight, as UV light can lead to the development of hydrogen sulphide compounds inside your Mason jar.
