How to make rubbing ethyl alcohol?
To make rubbing ethyl alcohol, also known as isopropyl alcohol, you will need the following materials:
Materials:
- 99% isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol)
- Distilled water
- Mixing container (e.g., glass beaker or measuring cup)
- Stirring utensil (e.g., glass stirring rod or spoon)
- Funnel
- Empty, clean squeeze bottle or spray bottle (for storing the rubbing alcohol)
Procedure:
Step 1: Calculate the Amount of Distilled Water Needed
The first step is to determine how much distilled water you need to add to the 99% isopropyl alcohol to create rubbing alcohol with the desired concentration. For a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution (the most common concentration for rubbing alcohol), you will need to add 3 parts distilled water to 7 parts 99% isopropyl alcohol.
For example, if you want to make 100 mL of 70% isopropyl alcohol, you will need:
- 70 mL of 99% isopropyl alcohol
- 30 mL of distilled water
Step 2: Mix the Isopropyl Alcohol and Distilled Water
1. Pour the measured amount of 99% isopropyl alcohol into the mixing container.
2. Add the measured amount of distilled water to the isopropyl alcohol.
3. Stir the mixture thoroughly using the stirring utensil until the ingredients are well combined.
Step 3: Transfer the Rubbing Alcohol to a Squeeze Bottle or Spray Bottle
1. Use a funnel to carefully transfer the rubbing alcohol mixture into the empty, clean squeeze bottle or spray bottle.
2. Label the bottle clearly as "Rubbing Alcohol 70%" or "Isopropyl Alcohol 70%" and include the date of preparation.
Your homemade rubbing ethyl alcohol is now ready to use! Store the rubbing alcohol in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
Note:
- Always use 99% isopropyl alcohol for making rubbing alcohol. Lower concentrations of isopropyl alcohol may not be effective as a disinfectant.
- Rubbing alcohol is flammable. Keep it away from open flames and sparks.
- Rubbing alcohol can cause skin and eye irritation. Use it with caution and avoid contact with these areas. If rubbing alcohol comes into contact with your skin or eyes, rinse thoroughly with water.
