Madeira wine does it have to be refrigerated?
Whether or not you need to refrigerate Madeira wine depends on the type and age of the wine:
Fortified Madeira:
* Dry Madeira (Sercial, Verdelho, and dry Bual): These can be cellared at room temperature, similar to other fortified wines like sherry. They have a high alcohol content and are very stable.
* Medium-Sweet Madeira (Boal and medium-sweet Bual): These can also be cellared at room temperature, but they may benefit from being refrigerated if you're not planning to finish them within a few months.
* Sweet Madeira (Malmsey): These are best stored in the refrigerator, especially if you are not planning to finish them quickly.
Unfortified Madeira:
* These wines are less common and are similar to table wines. They are typically best stored in the refrigerator after opening.
General Recommendations:
* Unopened Madeira: Store at room temperature in a cool, dark place.
* Opened Madeira: Refrigerate to extend its shelf life.
Important Note:
* Opened Madeira can last for several months, even years, if stored properly.
* Remember that refrigeration slows down oxidation, but it doesn't stop it completely.
* Once opened, Madeira will gradually oxidize, resulting in a change in flavor.
If you're unsure about whether or not to refrigerate your specific bottle of Madeira, check the label for storage recommendations.
