When was sushi invented?

Sushi, as we know it today, originated in Japan in the 1800s. The most popular type of sushi, nigiri sushi, was invented by Hanaya Yohei in Tokyo in the 1820s. This version consisted of raw fish pressed onto vinegared rice and coated with wasabi. However, it's important to note that the concept of preserving fish or other food items, such as the precursor of sushi, has existed for centuries in various parts of the world, including Southeast Asia, China, and Japan.
