Where do starfishes live?

Starfish, or sea stars, live in oceans all over the world, but they are most common in shallow, coastal waters.

Here's a bit more detail:

* Different species live in different areas: There are over 1,800 species of starfish, and each has its own preferred habitat.

* Depth and temperature: They can be found from the intertidal zone (where the ocean meets the land) down to depths of over 6,000 meters (20,000 feet). Some species prefer warmer waters, while others are more adapted to cold, deep oceans.

* Rocky, sandy, or muddy bottoms: They can be found on rocky shores, sandy beaches, and muddy seafloors.

* Coral reefs: Many starfish species are found in coral reefs, where they play an important role in the ecosystem.

So, while starfish are found in a wide range of environments, their ideal habitat is typically shallow, coastal waters with a variety of surfaces for them to live on.
