Does it take two starfish to have babies?

Starfish, also known as sea stars, are capable of reproducing both sexually and asexually.

Asexual reproduction: Some starfish species can reproduce asexually by splitting their bodies in two, a process known as fission. Each half then regenerates the missing parts, resulting in two new individuals.

Sexual reproduction: Sexual reproduction in starfish involves two individuals, typically male and female. During the mating season, they release their gametes (eggs and sperm) into the water. Fertilization occurs externally, and the fertilized eggs develop into free-swimming larvae. The larvae eventually settle down and undergo metamorphosis, transforming into juvenile starfish.

Therefore, while some starfish species can reproduce asexually, sexual reproduction usually requires two starfish (male and female) to produce offspring.
