Why is a kingfisher called kingfisher?

Kingfishers are named for their habit of diving into the water to catch fish. The word "kingfisher" is derived from the Old English words "cyning" (meaning "king") and "fiscer" (meaning "fisher"). Kingfishers are also sometimes called "water birds" or "river birds" because of their close association with water.
