What does immortal jellyfish eats?
Immortal jellyfish, also known as Turritopsis dohrnii, do not have a typical diet as they don't consume food like other animals do. Instead, they possess an extraordinary ability called transdifferentiation, which allows them to revert from a sexually mature adult stage back to an asexual polyp stage through a process known as "cellular transdifferentiation." In simple terms, they can essentially reset their life cycle and potentially become biologically immortal if environmental conditions permit.
Therefore, the immortal jellyfish does not have a specific diet in the traditional sense. They obtain nutrients through the water column by absorbing organic particles and dissolved nutrients through their body surface. They may feed on small zooplankton, algae, or other organic matter found in their surrounding environment. However, their primary focus is not on feeding like other animals but on maintaining their transdifferentiation abilities, which ensure their unique form of immortality.
