How to Steam Oysters
Not only do steamed oysters taste great, but they can be prepared quickly for a delicious yet different meal. Oysters can also be baked or grilled, but steaming is the preparation method of choice for seafood chefs around the world. Unless you're going to eat them raw, of course--another popular option.
Things You'll Need
- Steamer
- Oysters (roughly 12 per person)
- 2 cups water or beer
- 1/2 stick of butter
- 1/2 cup of brown vinegar
Instructions
-
Add about 2 cups of water or beer, or enough to be 3/4 inch deep in the steamer. Boil on high heat for about 5 minutes or until the steam rolls out when the lid is opened slightly.
-
Add oysters and an additional cup of water and cover on medium heat.
-
Steam oysters about 5 to 10 minutes, or until the majority of the oysters have opened. Do not overcook.
-
Serve hot, with melted butter and vinegar as condiments.
