Deep fryers and infrared fryers give turkey a crispy crunch and a moist, juicy center. Deep fryers use hot oil, while infrared fryers utilize propane as the heat source.

Types

  • Deep fryers cook turkey in a bath of hot oil for several hours to reach the desired temperature. Infrared fryers use propane to create infrared heat to cook turkey.

Cost

  • Infrared turkey fryers cost between $140 and $180. Turkey deep fryers have a much wider range. They can run any where from $40 to $900 depending on size and quality.

Warning

  • Both fryers cook turkey at an extremely high temperature and should be used cautiously. Hot oil from deep fryers is especially dangerous if not handled properly.

Time Frame

  • Infrared fryers cook turkey faster because they do not use oil. But both fryers take several hours to cook the turkey thoroughly.

Size

  • Both fryers can usually cook turkeys that are 16 pounds or smaller.

Taste

  • Some consumers prefer infrared fryers because they cook turkey with dry rubs on the skin. Dry rubs cannot be used with deep fryers because the oil would wash the spices away. Both fryers allow consumers to use marinades inside the turkey. There is no taste difference if no additional spices are used.
