How to Bake Veal Bratwurst

Bratwurst is a German sausage most often made from veal or from a combination of veal and pork seasoned with caraway, cumin, coriander and paprika, with hints of ginger and nutmeg. The main thing that sets bratwurst apart from other types of sausage is that traditionally, it is made of finely ground meat with no fillers of any kind. Bratwurst is generally sold fully cooked, so when baking it, you only need to heat it through. You can bake bratwurst whole by itself, or you can slice it and add it to a casserole.

Things You'll Need

  • Baking dish
  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • Aluminum foil
  • Instant-read thermometer

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. Spray a baking dish with a very light coating of nonstick cooking spray.

  3. Arrange your bratwurst in a flat layer in the baking dish if you are baking it whole. Toss sliced bratwurst with your casserole ingredients, such as parboiled potatoes, sauteed onions and sauerkraut, if you are making a casserole.

  4. Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil to help keep the bratwurst from drying out or browning too much.

  5. Bake the bratwurst for 30 minutes or until an instant-read thermometer shows a temperature of at least 145 F. Bratwurst will continue to cook once it has been removed from the oven, so let it rest and come to a temperature of 165 F before serving.
