How to Work a Weber One Touch Grill (16 Steps)

Weber One-Touch charcoal grills combine the efficient grilling of the classic kettle style with a convenient lever control for easily adjusting heat-controlling air vents on the underside of the kettle. Proper lighting and placement of coals coupled with vent adjustment are the keys to successful cooking in this grill.

Things You'll Need

  • Weber One-Touch charcoal grill
  • Large bag natural lump charcoal
  • Electric charcoal starter
  • Vegetable oil grilling spray
  • Meat or poultry of choice
  • Drip pan containing 2 cups of water (for indirect grilling method)

Starting Fire and Adjusting Vents

  1. Remove and set aside the lid and cooking grate, and pour enough lump charcoal into the grill to completely cover the coal grate with one layer of charcoal.

  2. Use the One-Touch lever below the kettle to open wide all lower vents for maximum air flow.

  3. Huddle the charcoal into a mound in the center of the coal grate and bury an electric charcoal starter iron into the coals before plugging in the device.

  4. Keep the starter in the coals for at least 8 minutes until the charcoal begins to smoke and crackle.

  5. Unplug and remove the starter, close the lid with all grill vents open wide for maximum air flow, and allow charcoal to smolder for another 10 minutes until gray or glowing.

  6. Follow the steps below for either direct or indirect grilling setups.

Direct Grilling in the Kettle

  1. Use the unplugged electric starter iron to evenly spread the lit coals across the coal grate.

  2. Coat cooking grate lightly with vegetable oil grilling spray and place on the grill.

  3. Place meat or poultry on the grate directly over the coals.

  4. Grill meat for desired times and to desired temperatures, consulting grill cookbooks or grilling manuals for recommended times based on meat or poultry type.

Indirect Grilling in the Kettle

  1. Use the unplugged electric starter iron to push all lit charcoal to one side of the grill, leaving a coal-free zone on the opposite side of the coal grate.

  2. Place a drip pan containing about two cups of water atop the coal grate in the coal-free zone.

  3. Coat cooking grate lightly with vegetable oil grilling spray and place on the grill.

  4. Place the meat directly above the drip pan on the cooking grate and close the grill lid tightly.

  5. Adjust lid vents and lower One-Touch vents based on outside temperature and wind speed to maintain temperatures of between 250 and 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Consult grilling cookbooks or manuals for prescribed indirect grilling times based on meat types.

  6. Add a handful or two of fresh charcoal to the lit coals every hour.
